Sample Work #1 (Spanish Skull)

Although this piece was assigned in spanish class, I consider it to be part of my work in applied design, because I used various techniques on this that I learned in Media class.

Sample Work #2 (Texture Collage)

In this collage that we did in Media, we had to take various rubbings of textures and put them to use in a collage. I chose to use this one because I spent a decent amount of time making it, and I think it's great!

Sample Work #3 (True New York poem)

A stumpy, pregnant teenage girl
Waddles onto the train like a penguin
Carrying her knock-off iPod in her hand
And her McDonald’s Shamrock Shake in the other
Behind her in the corner
Is a woman with wispy white hairs
And a pair of filthy, pungent Reebok’s
Talking to herself about tomatoes
Across from me is a lady smoothing her cuticles with a baby carrot
That still has her munch marks
Towering above me
Is a middle-aged gal
With velvet-red matte lips
And coral eyeshadow slowly straying away from her lids
When we come to a stop at Union Square
Two old, tired people get on
Coated in a thick layer of grime
The screaming children sitting down
With Dora backpacks and their breakfast on their sleeve
Are escorted by their parents
With under eye circles the color of squashed eggplant
Two cross-dressers slide down the train car
Like it’s a water slide
Drenched in magenta glitter eyeliner
And Chanel No. 5
This amuses the little kids with the Dora backpacks
Although their parents sigh in shame
At the pure eclecticism
That is known as the Manhattan Bound L Train

End-of-Year Reflection

I chose these three pieces because I spent a lot of time on them and they show the work I value. I ended up using my texture collage, the spanish skull coloring piece, and my "True New York" poem.

If I had more time to work on these, I probably would've used my time more efficiently. Sometimes I want to get things done in one sitting (regardless of whether or not I have the extra time), and it turns out to not be as good as they could be.

From reviewing these pieces I learned that I am a diligent worker. In the previous paragraph I just said that getting things done in one sitting can be a negative thing, but I do think it shows commitment.

In the beginning of this year, I was very concious about the amount of time I spent on assignments, and I thought that by spending a ton of time on things they would turn out really great, only to find that spending half the time and double the effort it is just as great.

As for goal setting, my primary goal is to work on getting at my Humanities writing (short answer sections on tests, essays, analyses). Another thing I want to work on is my homework strategies. Usually, I spend a lot of time and effort doing something, and then I end up either completely forgetting a part or do it incorrectly. (Direct result of not following instructions). Sometimes I skip that whole section, not realizing that it is there for a reason.

Looking at the “About Me” I wrote earlier in September, I can see the monumental progression within my writing. It didn’t seem to have a lot of voice or detail, and by looking at some of my work from earlier this year, the transformation my writing has undergone is unequivocal.
